With A Land Rover you can go anywhere. With a Land Cruiser you can come back. With a 911 you get there faster, come back in style and have fun all the way.
At first I thought, nice try. Funny but fake. But no, this is for real. The rallye model in old fashioned Martini colours is a 1975 911, inspired by the famous Safari 911s which dominated the 1978 Kenya Rally.
This old air-cooled sportsbuggy recently embarrassed Porsche a bit. Bothered a lot of official Cayennes at the 2007 Transsyberia Rallye by running ahead of them... ahead of 25 out of 26 Cayennes to be exact.
This winter the team wants to join the AfricaRace, the spiritual successor to the Dakhar Rally, which has been emigrates to Argentina in the last couple of years.
Oh this "911 Safari" in matte sand colour. Using the iconic Poresche 911 lines to fix all the tools you need to get the car out of sand and mud. Including an anchor. That's right. Erik Brandenburg, the crazy Doc who has tranformed these 911s into die-hard super-offroad rallye cars, had used a spare wheel as an anchor to get him unstuck until he disvovered a better method. Just throw a real anchor into the sand, and then use the winch to pull yourself out. Yes, didn't I mention? The Porsche has two winches - in the front and rear bumper.
I am in love with the sandy coloured one.
BTW Put the spare wheel tire on the front or the back of the car and a roof tent on top, and you have a real expedition racer. Why globetrotting in Landies and Cruisers if you can have an indestructible 911?
Thanks to the article in the great German enthousiast car mag "Abgefahren" on this truly mad and loveable car project. http://de-de.facebook.com/pages/ABGEFAHREN-MAGAZINde/108995039518, buy the latest issue, please.
