Camper Fascination

Well, right away, I am not a camper person, I have never been on a camping trip. But I am fascinated what people design and engineer when space is limited. Give us humans a restriction and we come up with brilliant ideas how to use that limited "space".

My ideal multi-purpose vehicle is a car-like van which can
  1. transport large things
  2. carry up to 7 or 8 people in decent comfort
  3. serve as office space for 5 people
  4. can be used for trips as a recreational mobile space to sleep, cook and house 2 couples and 2 kids
  5. the van should drive like a car and should offer slightly better off-road capabilities than a normal vehicle of this type... and it should not be recognizable as a camper!
No way? Well, until I stumbled upon the VW T5 camper conversion by SpaceCamper.

Their conversions tick the boxes of looks, practicality, low weight and great technical solutions like the fixings for the 3-people bench which converts to a nice sleeping area. Not only that, the bench/bed can be removed in a couple of seconds and because it is really light, that task can be done by any person - alone. All SpaceCampers can optionally be equipped with a push-up roof that can be used as a look-out post. And you can have a simple fold-away dry-toilet as a last resort. And a very clever shower under the opened rear hatch.

I particularly like the SpaceCamper Light version, which has a narrower kitchen, tale and storage sidewall.

Therefore the bed is wider. Storage can be adapted to your needs by offering clip-on bags. Not only is this design really  flexible and practical, it also helps to keep the center of gravity of such a vehicle really low.

What customers love most is that great unrestricted load area for bikes, snowboards, skis, surf boards and even motorbikes. And that all this is achieved with only a fraction of the weight thant competitor conversions. Therefore the vehicle drives like a normal VW T5 and can load quite a bit more than other campers.

Even 7-seater configurations are possible :-)

An example of how a Spacecamper can be used in a professional environment. [Something for Bauticker.com?]

The T5 can be ordered with optional 4 wheel-drive called 4motion. There are a number of specialists which enhance the off-road capabilities. Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge recently came up with a special series called the Rockton which uses the well-known Seikel chassis for the T5. Spacecamper itself has recently created a showcase "All-Terrain" conversion with air-suspension.

How did they come up with such a great, versatile and yet simple and light system like SpaceCamper and especially the SpaceCamper Light? Well the Spacecamper guys are the same people who have created the famous small, "suspended" folding bike: the Birdy and it's even smaller sibling the Frog.

But there is one area which can be optimised... and that is the push-up roof. Why not opening the roof a full 180 degrees like the american flip-pac roofs or the Jeep Earthroamer ... More on that later.
